Tanzania in East Africa is one of the continents most exciting and diverse gap year destinations. Tanzania, is safe, beautiful and blessed with rich Maasai culture, the worlds highest free standing mountain and gorgeous beaches. Tanzania also contains Zanzibar, the Spice islands, a tropical island paradise. The great rift valley, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Victoria, the Serengeti and Zanzibar are legendary. Fearless explorers, proud warriors and mighty beasts have roamed across this unassuming land, but history and politics have not always been kind and have left their mark.

Best time to visit: June to October

Widely regarded as the most scenic: the Rongai route ascents Kilimanjaro from the north eastern side of the mountain, along the border between Tanzania and Kenya. This route retains a sense of unspoilt wilderness and offers a different perspective on Kilimanjaro by approaching it from the north.

Machame, known as the "Whiskey" route, is now the most popular route on the mountain. Compared with Marangu, the days on Machame are longer and the walks are steeper. It is far more challenging route.

The Marangu Route (also known at the 'Coca-Cola' route) is the easiest ascent of Kilimanjaro, although any ascent can be challenging. It crosses The Saddle, a 5km wide, high-altitude, semi-desert that separates craggy Mawenzi from the main summit Kibo. Summiting at dawn views from the crater rim are often spectacular.
