Diving in Thailand

Diving in Thailand on a diving in Thailand Gap Year.

Diving in Thailand is great for many reasons. The diversity of the fish species, the temperature and the low cost of diving in Thailand are but a small number of reasons.  All though scuba diving in Thailand can be done all over the country, there are different things to see depending upon the location of the dive shop. Most people learn to scuba dive in Thailand on Koh Tao famous as a diving island. In Koh Tao you can start diving in Thailand at one of the many schools, one of the better ones we use at Xtreme Gap.  If you are going to Learn diving in Thailand you need to consider what level of diving you wish to train to. Most go from beginner level  by completing an open water diving course in Thailand and then immediately afterward complete their Advanced Open Water Diving Course in Thailand.  This allows them to dive deeper, and generally gives them greater options for diving in thailand. Some chose to complete Rescue Diver course in Thailand as a precursor to the Divemaster Course in Thailand.

When Diving in Thailand, particularly in Koh Tao, one of the highlights of any dive might be diving with a whale shark. It is very rare to see a whale shark when diving in Thailand, or elsewhere for that matter, but when you do get to go diving with one, the experience is sensational. When diving in Thailand you may also see sharks mainly grey reefs and  white tips and black tips. Although totally harmless they always add a shot of adrenaline to any dive. When diving in Thailand you will also get to see many other fish species, Barracuda, lion fish, groupers and lots Sturgeon fish.  Diving in Thailand you also get to meet Mr Trigger fish. Anyone who has been diving in Koh Tao will tell you that it is best not to piss one of these things off, as they can be a little feisty. Still, that is about the most dangerous creature you will meet when diving in Thailand. It is very important to observe the rules of look but don’t touch when diving in Thailand. Despite this fact many people do. This is bad as touching coral and other specials can kill the marine life, and also some of the fish like lion fish and puffer fish are highly poisonous.

Diving in Thailand is also very cheap.

With the low cost of living and easy accessibility to the sea, Diving in Thailand is great value, typically a dive can cost as little as £15. Many people start their gap year diving in Thailand, and then move on to Australia to be shocked at the high price difference. This is not to say don’t go diving in Australia as there is excellent diving there, however, if you plan on doing lots of diving Thailand is the place to do it. Most people planning on doing lots of diving in Thailand will opt to take a Divemaster course in Thailand. This is a great way to get unlimited diving in Thailand over a set number of weeks, our Programme allows up to 12 weeks of diving as much as 5 times a day! When you compare this to an Australia Divemaster course where you will be fortunate to clock 100 dives over 10 weeks it becomes obvious: diving in Thailand is much better value.

The quality of the diving in Thailand is world class, and so are the safety standards, most of the time the instructors are the same instructors who work in Australia, so don’t be put off by people telling you the safety standards of diving in Thailand are not up to par with the rest of the world.
