Kitesurfing or kite boarding is quite easy to learn, and seriously cool to master. It is easier than wind surfing or surfing. Kitesurfing is a new sport, regarded by some as an extreme sport. However, with the advances in equipment and it is becoming regarded as more of a exciting adrenaline sport. Kitesurfing equipment now is very comfortable and the safety standards have increased considerably. There is still some risk involved, making it very important to learn this sport with respect and under the compliance of safety regulations—supervised by instructors with the correct equipment and above all correct safety standards.

Your kitesurf course will be given by an instructor having IKO/BKSA certificate and with several years of experience in teaching. They will instruct you with radio headsets allowing 2 way communication.

Tarifa is famous for the excellent quality of its wind which blows in some of the biggest kitesurfing professionals world wide and turns this seaside village into a Mecca for the trendy, younger set that travels the world in search of sun, sea, sand and most of all: Kitesurfing.

What once was an idyllic small fishing town, unheard of 20 years ago is now the world centre for Kite surfing training and development.

In summer is it rare to live 2 consecutive days without wind and in winter Tarifa is one of the few places in whole Europe where it is possible to sail with agreeable temperatures.

Itinerary

Starter courses of 3 days will take you through 4 hours of training every day. If you do well, in the end you can ‘take off’ your self. To allow for the occasional rare windless day allow up to 7 days in Tarifa, although the Kite surfing course will last 3 days. Additional Kite time can be booked locally.

When lessons are over, you can relax and unwind on the beach or at the beach bars or head into town. Tarifa is a charming former fishing village with narrow cobble-stone streets, tumbling jasmine and beautiful old colonial houses. There’s plenty to explore both by day and at night when the part atmosphere kicks in!

Tarifa

Tarifa is located on the southern most tip of Spain and the European continent. The straight of Gibraltar and African coast are so close that the almost touch. Due to the jet effect of the straight the winds get additional force and accelerations so that they easily reach 8 on the beaufort scale on top days. No doubt Tarifa is one of the best spots to kitesurf in Europe, with almost 100% wind guarantee. However, you are never alone here, in July and August the beaches are full of kite surfers and windsurfers. This is also the best place to learn Kite surfing due to the relatively low cost of instruction and great wind/ weather conditions.

The wind

During Summer the dominating wind is the LAVANTE blowing from the east (cross offshore) and in the Autumn and spring it is the POINIENTE blowing from the west, side shore to cross onshore. Due to its unquie geographical location, wind is almost guaranteed as is hot sunshine providing the perfect setting for Kite surfing!

Accommodation: In peak season Accommodation can be limited, especially at the kite sirf beach is a protected area—there are only 2 hotels available. In Tarifa itself there are more but the can be fairly expensive. We advise you book early. We have people on the ground who can arrange this for you.
